SXSW 2k7 Preview: Plan B

Full disclosure: I am insanely busy today, so this is all you get.

Go see Plan B at SXSW -- his album is finally hitting the States on April 17th through Cordless, and he is playing a select group of shows in support. Since I have said plenty about him aleady, here is what others have to say:

DARTZ!

I've discovered a fair share of great bands in the past, but if it wasn't for one of my co-workers, I may have never come across DARTZ!. Not much unlike running early Talking Heads through late '90s Dischord, this British group applies their DIY ethic to a host to addictive art punk jams. The band just dropped This Is My Ship, their debut and one of the most exciting albums to be released this year. Since first hearing "Network Network Network," I was half-expecting another band with a couple of good tunes and an awful album, but this is an effort that surprised me because everything is set into place perfectly, each note nestled in the right place. This is dance rock for everything else but the dance floor.

The Arcade Fire was on SNL this past weekend, and overall, it was kind of blah. I haven't spent a lot of time with their new album, but I am not really feeling it as much as Funeral, but I'll give it another chance. The show was pretty disappointing as well.

Speaking of disappointing, I saw Razorlight last night. My god that new record is awful, and I can't believe how many people went crazy when they played "America." Plus some dude was waving an Irish flag during their set, does he even know that the band isn't from there?

This week, look for more SXSW previews as well a new feature where I'll be looking at a few of my all time favorite bands, starting with Saint Etienne. I was going to do Manic Street Preachers first, but Jamie's Runout Groove did an admirable job of covering them, so I'll just direct you to his profile.

Action Plan

According to the members of Action Plan, they're the 34th best band that they've ever heard. Big words for a young band that has only released two singles to date, but since when is bragging new to the British music scene? I don't know if I would say they're that great yet, but their music definitely shows loads of promise. They play a sort of brooding post-punk, full of furious guitar riffs, intense singing/yelling, and crashing drums. Both of their singles are tops, I'd recommend that you check them both out. Their first single "Stendhal" is a bit of a stomper that builds into a killer chorus. Comparatively, their second single "He" (out now on Modern Art) is darker fare--faster, harsher, and bit more intense. If you're a fan of Cazals, Mother Vulpine, or The Voom Blooms then you'll definitely love Action Plan.

New Music For The Weekend

To keep in line with this week's SXSW theme, here are four bands that will be playing in Austin next month.


Delorentos: This band describes themselves as "alternative rock," but they're definitely not The Soup Dragons. Drawing on influences like Television and Interpol, this Irish band has become one of the top unsigned bands in Ireland and are bringing the party to Austin for a pair of shows.

Illinois: This Bucks County, PA band draws on influences both expected and ones that will make you ask "What the fuck?" Their Ace Fu debut is called What The Hell Do I Know? and it tears away at indie rock misconceptions by telling us all that there is room to grow in this tired genre.

Kristoffer Ragnstam: If Ted Leo and Beck shacked up for the night and created a baby, this is what the kid would sound like. His debut album Sweet Bills may be all over the place, but it is filled with great, great songs.

The Blood Arm: This Los Angeles band has been bubbling under for what seems like years now, but 2007 will be the year for them. The UK and Europe have embraced them, and the handful of dates they've played Stateside indicate exactly why the rest of the world loves them. The shows are feverish and their spiky garage meets dance punk can't be topped.

The Immediate

This was supposed to go up earlier today, but after I started writing it last night, I was exhausted. A little late maybe, but you still got it. The Immediate hail from Dublin, and oddly enough, gained much of their musical knowledge from their school caretaker. It was through him that they were introduced to the likes of the Velvet Underground, Can, Love and Serge Gainsbourg. These sounds, coupled with teenage fixations on Green Day and Pink Floyd, pushed the guys to start a band, one that eventually caught the ears of the people over at Fierce Panda. Look for the band's debut album In Towers & Clouds, which is out now.

SXSW 2k7 Preview: The Cinematics

The Cinematics are a likeable group of guys, and it's something that is reflected in their sound. At first listen, it's easy to pick out strains of bands like Editors, Franz Ferdinand and We Are Scientists, but upon further review, it's clear that this band has a few trick up their sleeves. They formed in Glasgow, and outside of the usual suspects, they also draw on Television and the Smashing Pumpkins, among others. The band played a select group of dates in the States late last year, wowing crowds in both NYC and Boston, and now they're back for more.

Like most bands, the environment in which they were raised informs their demeanor, but for them it's just a solid starting point -- small towns can only offer so much. The band has released two solid singles in the UK, and this spring will see the release of their debut album A Strange Education on TVT. I am not sure what their full schedule at SXSW is yet, but their "official" showcase show is on Thursday, March 15th at the Flamingo Cantina at 8 pm.

SXSW 2k7 Preview: iLiKETRAiNS

Each year, SXSW is a music lover's dream, and this year will be no different. I've only looked at the schedule for the first day, and I am already overwhelmed! There are just too many great bands to see, so it will be much like last year -- catching as many bands as I can while sustaining myself with Red Bulls and fajitas.

Some of the bands that jumped out at me already include Birdmonster, Illinois, Sea Wolf, Softlighties, Every Move A Picture and Peter Bjorn & John to just name a few, but the first SXSW band I want to touch on is iLiKETRAiNS.



There's something very special going on in Leeds right now, and iLiKETRAiNS is very much a part of that, creating stark historical odes that recall the glorious moments of Joy Division and the Psychedelic Furs. The band is moody, their sound is atmospheric and lyrically, they are as esoteric as you can get, referencing Captain Scott's Antarctic expeditions and former chess champion and exile Bobby Fischer. I can't wait to check this band out live, as it seems the show is as powerful as the music. The band is playing at 8:15 pm at Emo's Jr on Wednesday the 14th.

Does anyone in Boston shovel the sidewalks? I've never been in a city that's so treacherous just to walk around during the winter, and when I bring this up to Boston natives, people act offended that I would even suggest that people should clean the ice and snow off the sidewalks in front of their house/apartment.

Anyway, the Apples In Stereo were in town this weekend, and they played a solid show. I missed Lily Allen because I never got my tickets, but for those of who missed out, she will be back in April. There's a new video for "Alfie," which is the worst song on an otherwise great album. Check it out below.

Alterkicks

I discovered Alterkicks on the internet sometime last fall, but when I tried to put pen to paper the words just didn't come. Months later, I checked out their website again and finally felt ready to try attempt number two on the post. Alterkicks is a five-piece band from Liverpool that has been growing steadily in the British music scene for the last few years. Though their bio cites musical chameleons like Love, the Kinks, Radiohead, and David Bowie as their idols, personally I don't hear those bands' influence in their music at all. Instead, I see Alterkicks as a catchy, lighthearted indie rock rock band that's poppier than even Boy Kill Boy, Apartment, or Pull Tiger Tail. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because songs like "On A Holiday" (the dynamic video for this track is pasted above), "My Downfall," and "May" are upbeat, fun, and definitely worth a listen.

New Music For The Weekend

Foreign Islands: One thing I miss about my days in Philly were the parties. Man, were they great! I spent so many late nights drinking beer after beer, listening to tunes blasted at top volume and walking home covered in sweat. Boston, tell me where this shit happens please. Until then, rocking out to Foreign Islands will do just fine. Restart Now! is out on March 20th through Deaf Dumb & Blind.

The Maccabees: As if I haven't talked about this band enough, but that's what good music does -- it consumes you, it forces you to tell all of your friends and it forces you to listen to it non-stop. That's what The Maccabees have been for me, and their new single "About Your Dress" [out Feb. 26th on Fiction] is more of the same -- spiky and angular indie rock. I need an album already!

Winterkids: Saying that this band is cute is an understatement, but don't let that deter you. The band hails from the UK and while they may harness the cute, they aren't sickening like Mates of State. A modern band has never reminded me of The Wedding Present this much while still being wholly original.

Manic Street Preachers: I totally missed this when it came out this past November, but only because I live in one of the areas of the world that hasn't given this great band thier due. Everything Must Go was a tough album -- it was one of heightened expectations, but most importantly, it was the first album after the strange disappearance of guitarist Richey Edwards. It's been a decade and the album is still as powerful as the first time I heard it, plus the 10th Anniversary Edition is filled with b-sides, acoustic versions and live tracks, spread out over two discs and a DVD.

The Fratellis

Have I written about this band yet? I totally don't remember and I feel kind of dumb about it. I guess I could search my old posts, but I am lazy, so I am going to hold off on that. I found the The Fratellis on Tommyshots last April and I immediately fell in love with "Chelsea Dagger," a ridiculously catchy blast of Brit rock. It's not the most original sound, but if you've been rocking The View or Arctic Monkeys, I am pretty sure you'll like these albums. Costello Music is out through Interscope on March 13th in the US, plus the band will be playing a handful of dates here.

Rademacher: New Album

I'm not an expert, but I can honestly say that exciting things don't happen in central California. The San Joaquin Valley is a vast desert littered with farms and migrant workers, but there's not much in the way of culture. It's simply a land of dry and wet seasons, of flat expanses and of a California that never makes it on to prime time TV. At the center of all of this is Fresno, a city of well over 500,000 that shuts down early and has the rules of a small town. While this may not be a picture perfect mecca of artistic expression like Williamsburg or Silver Lake, there are great ideas brewing here.

Fresno is where Rademacher calls home, and while they may not be proud of, they know that it's the hometown which gets the creative juices flowing. The band's first three EPs have reflected this ennui, and it has made for amazing music. This year will see the band drop Stunts, their debut album which was produced by Earlimart's Aaron Espinoza, featuring all of the things you've loved about them in the past. It's an album full of the greatest leaps and bounds, and a sound that will always be tied to California. It's light years away from Pavement, a common and often lazy comparison that doesn't do the band justice. Stunts has moments that are both welcoming and surprising, marrying the loner spirit of Gram Parsons with the spark of the Silversun Pickups.

Look for the band on the road this March.

The Maccabees Get Remixed

I am sure there are plenty of bands that I could write about, as there are plenty of great ones out there that I have yet to mention, but I am not going to let this Tuesday go without mentioning one of my latest addictions. It was a couple of years ago when I first discovered The Maccabees and "Lego" became one of those songs that I just couldn't stop spinning. This year hasn't been much different, as the band is about to drop "About Your Dress" on Fiction on Feb. 26th, and on top of that, there's a remix of "X-ray" floating around the internet. I wasn't too sure about the idea of his at first because really, does everything need to be remixed? Luckily I gave the reworking a chance because it's awesome -- it buzzes and snaps in all of the right places, showing that this band not only works in the club, but on the dance floor as well.

This weekend was great, and believe it or not, I ended it watching the Grammys. Yeah dudes, I know, get over it, they kind of suck a little more each year and they don't have any awards honoring Joanna Newsom or obscure Knife remixes, but I've been watching every year. Overall, the show was a dud, but it had its moments. The much-anticipated Police reunion was just kind of there. They played "Roxanne," and it was about one minute short of putting me to sleep. The night's highlight came from Gnarls Barkley, whose played to death "Crazy" was reimagined as a slowed-down military march complete with strings. After this past July, I never wanted to hear the song again, but now I think I could listen to the new version over and over.

Close runner-up: Mary J. Blige's first performance of the night.

Also, I am not sure if the Academy is making a statement or not, but it's pretty cool that the Dixie Chicks won a few awards.

Lets Bitter Cinema

When I say that Lets Bitter Cinema isn't a punk band, you have to take that with a grain of salt. Their music is certainly tried and true punk, the type that makes you sweaty and aggressive and happy to be alive... but Lets Bitter Cinema is not a band in any sense of the word. "Band" connotes multiple people, while the truth of the matter is that Lets Bitter Cinema is really only one guy from Sheffield who makes a ton of raucous noise all by himself. [If you are having a hard time grasping this difficult concept, try to think of Lets Bitter Cinema as the punk Bright Eyes or the not god awful Young Love.]

Lets Bitter Cinema recently emerged on the scene with a handful of club dates throughout the UK and a debut single on the impeccable Young & Lost Club. The single showcases a raw, grating sound with harsh spitfire vocal delivery and a pounding rhythmic intensity that belies the one-man band set-up. I like the a-side of that single a lot ("Take This Act Down"), but I think the intense pent up energy exhibited on the b-side ("Oh Vienna") makes for a more compelling track. It feels like a machine gun, which really is a compliment of the highest order.

New Music For The Weekend

The Shins are overrated. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah sound like unmastered and boring Talking Heads. And Of Montreal is indie rock's version of a Renaissance Fair.

But the bands I have for you this weekend are beyond awesome, and they are making 2007 a better place.


Los Olvidados: If California continues to wow me with bands like this, I am going to have to switch coasts. This Moorpark, CA band is about to drop Left Coast Or Pacifica And His Misadventures At The Flower Fields, which is an Americana-tinged masterpiece and one of my absolute favorite unsigned bands of the moment. Never refuse a Myspace friend request because you might miss a band this good.

Wintersleep: I'm sick of hearing how Canada is the new this or the new that, but it's hard to ignore all of the great music our neighbors up north are dropping on us. Wintersleep is a folk-rock quartet that brings to mind Hayden in his sunnier moments. Look for the band's Untitled, which hits stores in March.

Mumm-Ra: One of might think that a band named after a character from Thundercats would suck, but in this case they would be very wrong. This group makes great pop songs, but in totally not obvious way that recalls the Mystery Jets.

The Dykeenies: The fact that this band is nothing new might put off some people, but if you get really excited over Maximo Park and Scotland [like me!], than this band is for you. If you're in the UK, there's a good chance you'll get to see them this spring, and if not, look for their singles on Lavolta.

Exitfare Presents: Sure Juror

Pianos is one of my favorite NYC venues -- a place where I've spent many a night drinking, checking out great bands. This Saturday will be no different, except maybe like ten times better because I want all of you out there with me sharing in the music and beer. But most importantly, Sure Juror just released their second album and it's good, like Bloc Party and Los Olvidados good, and they're poised to become one of 2007's breakout bands.

Before you come out to the show, make sure you download a few song, learn the words and drop them $8 through the internet machine to buy SMUT. I couldn't be happier to be presenting this show. This is going to be an awesome night.

Maximo Park: New Song

While it took me awhile to get into the first Maximo Park, I did end up thinking it was quite good. Definitely nothing new, but they did the whole dance rock thing quite well. Our Earthly Pleasures, their sophomore release, will see the light of day on April 3rd through Warp, and their first single has started to trickle onto the internet. Can't say I am totally sold on "Our Velocity" yet, but it could be another slow burn.

Blood Red Shoes: They're a duo that makes much more noise than one would expect, with a drummer that makes Animal look like a nancy and a lead singer that soundsn like a more pop PJ Harvey. Look for them on tour, as they're playing anywhere that will have them in the UK.

Sky Larkin: I think it's pretty obvious about my love for Sky Larkin. Here's a new song that they rocked on BBC Radio a few weeks ago. Buy their debut single, which is out now on Dance To The Radio.

Los Olvidados

Lately I feel like all I've been talking about has been the UK. But let's take a break for now. There are a ton of great bands bouncing around between our coasts, especially California, which seems to be a new hotspot.

Los Olvidados hail from the the expanse of desert and highway just north of Los Angeles, and rather than being tied to that fabric of that city, they've created one of their own, piecing together a sound that is unmistakingly original and vibrant. Band leader Alex Jones has a gift for crafting songs that never leave your head, filling them with hooks and lyrics that actually mean something. The band's debut album Left Coast Or Pacifica And His Misadventures At The Flower Fields should be nothing short of brilliant. Each new song I've heard so far has made good on the sun-baked Americana of early demos like "Pacifist" and "John Cougar Melancholy," reminding me that great music will come from anywhere at any time.

The Decemberists: On Tour

The Decemberists begin the spring on the road...and will remain there for quite awhile. Tickets are already on sale, and in true Dischord Records spirit, one dollar from each ticket goes to Sisters of the Road, an organization helping Portland homeless.
